About University of Manchester
The University of Manchester was formed in 2004 by the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester (est. 1824) and UMIST. The university has a profound legacy in science: Ernest Rutherford split the atom here in 1917, Alan Turing developed his computing theories here, and graphene was isolated here in 2004 (earning a Nobel Prize). Manchester has more Nobel laureates than any other British university.
